Brief Update

Not much to report here, but I figured it's better to write something than to stay silent.  Last week, I went to the gym, and over the last 6 days, I've done about 3.5 hours of roadwork, so that's not too bad.

Life has been nuts lately.  (What else is new, right?)  My mother has been hospitalized since Sunday.  She's doing better and should be able to go home soon.  I'm planning for my move and helping my parents to plan for theirs and get the paperwork done for their new condo and so forth.  Additionally, I'm running my law practice and hustling to get some new clients, as well as finish my various writing projects.

In other words, life continues to be challenging.  I'm hoping to get to the gym tomorrow.

Wednesday Speed Training

Today I did another morning workout. The focus was on speed. I don't mean that the workout was particularly intense and brief; I mean that I practiced speed and getting faster. It's helpful to have this kind of session, just as it can be helpful to dedicate some sessions to better balance, power, and strategy.

Here's the recap.
  • 35 minutes of roadwork
  • 4 rounds of shadowboxing
  • 6 rounds on the double-end bag
  • 4 rounds of stretching
  • 1 round of situps and crunches
That's 15 rounds plus the roadwork. There's also a mental component of speed training, involving thinking of myself and seeing myself faster. While I was thinking in those terms during today's workout, I want to do some focused mental training dedicated to improving speed. It's a good feeling to be getting faster.

Tuesday's Sweat

1 hour and 13 minutes of roadwork today.  It's really hot and humid out there!

Monday: Starting the Week Right

I got to the gym fairly early this morning. (I wanted to get there even earlier, but I was making a map for my dad for his condo search and doing some online networking, and it was raining hard outside so I wanted to wait until I could head out the door without getting completely soaked.)

I saw Ricky this morning. That was cool because I hadn't seen him for a while. I seem to have been training at the times he's not there, so it was nice to see him again.

The workout was pretty good.
  • 45 minutes of roadwork (in defiance of the pouring rain, hah!)
  • 4 rounds of shadowboxing
  • 4 rounds on the double-end bag
  • 2 rounds on the heavy bag
  • 1 round of stretching
That makes 11 rounds plus the roadwork. Not bad for a rainy Monday morning.

I noticed my footwork was a little sluggish during the shadowboxing. That's frustrating, but I'll work on it more this week. Specifically, I'll focus on moving after throwing combinations because that's where I need to make it smoother.

Day of Rest

On the seventh (or first) day, he rested and saw that it was good.

Sunday has been a day off from training. I don't want to over-train. Over-training can sound like it implies some herculean effort, but it's surprisingly easy to do if you're not careful. Paying attention to the body, and even imposing some forced days of rest regardless of whether we think we need them, can help us go the distance with our training. After all, this body and mind have to last me for the rest of my life.

Saturday Easy Roadwork

Did 30 minutes today. Wanted to have a fairly easy day. Spent the rest of the day apartment hunting in Edgewater and hanging with Mark (my southpaw buddy).

Friday's Training

I had hoped to do a morning workout today, but I was kind of tired in the a.m. and moving very slowly, so I decided to wait.  I did get to the gym late this afternoon.  I'm glad I waited because I am sure I had a better workout than I would have had in the morning.  Here's how it went.
  • 30 minutes roadwork
  • 4 rounds on the double-end bag
  • 4 rounds on the speed bag
  • 2 rounds on the heavy bag
  • 2 rounds on the double-end bag
  • 1 round of stretching
